Artist: Karen Mooney

Artist Statement
My name is Karen Mooney, and I am an artist based in New Jersey, close to the Jersey Shore. My colorful studio serves as the creative hub where I bring my passion for art to life. I specialize in color and texture, aiming to connect with the minds and hearts of viewers, which brings me immense joy. My artistic repertoire includes life-sized beaded costumes, organic and abstract paintings of fantasy worlds, sculptural beadwork, and wet felting. Before dedicating myself to art full-time, I worked with individuals affected by Alzheimer’s Disease and was involved in the Dental Services community. Helping others has been deeply satisfying and has profoundly influenced my artistic perspective. Alongside my creative endeavors, I take great pride in my sons, their wives, and my four grandchildren. Mixed media best defines my artwork. From 2008 to 2012, I studied at Salem County Community College, where I was fortunate to have Paul Stankard as my professor for four years. I hold degrees in Fine Art Glass and Studio Arts. In 2012, I completed my artwork titled “Joseph’s Cloak of Many Colors.” Laura Donofer accepted it to be worn on the catwalk during her Glass Fashion Show at the 2012 GAS Conference. In 2013, the Renwick Gallery of Smithsonian Art sponsored a show where Fluehr Bressler, a prominent art collector, purchased my cloak. She has since donated it to the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC.
Artist Biography
Mixed Media best explains my artwork. From 2008-12, I was a student at Salem Community College. I was fortunate to have Paul Stankard as my professor for 4 years. My degrees are in Fine Art Glass and Studio Arts. I completed my first major art piece, Joseph’s Cloak of Many Colors, in 2012. It was accepted into Laura Donofer’s Glass Fashion Show, held at the 2012 GAS Conference. Corning Museum of Fine Art Glass published a book displaying all the pieces. The Renwick Gallery of Smithsonian Art sponsored a show in 2013 where Fluehr Bressler, a prominent art collector, purchased my cloak. Upon graduation, I volunteered at Wheaton Arts Center, doing flame-working demonstrations. I completed work on The listening shawl in January 2024. I am working on a seven-piece beaded glass costume for Laura Donofer’s upcoming glass fashion show in 2026.
